okay so I just finished Sonic Frontiers for the third time and I think I finally understand what they were going for
the open zones aren't really meant to be played fast. they're the "breath" between the intense moments. speed is the reward not the baseline
idk if that makes the game better or worse but it recontextualized it for me

that's actually a really interesting take
I always felt kind of restless in the open zones but if I frame it as "downtime" it makes more sense

disagree. if you have to reframe a game as NOT being about its core mechanic to enjoy it, the design failed
sonic is supposed to be about speed. a sonic game where you shouldn't go fast is broken by definition

^^^ this. the fishing minigame was more fun than half the open world traversal and that says something

okay fair point on the fishing lol
but I think the "breath" thing still holds. it's like how a good action movie has slow scenes to make the action hit harder. doesn't mean the movie is "broken"

hot take from me: Frontiers is actually the most ambitious Sonic game since SA2. it doesn't fully land but the ambition is real and I'd rather have ambitious failures than safe mediocrity
also the soundtrack is incredible and nobody talks about it enough

the Kronos Island theme and the final boss music were legitimately S-tier

"Undefeatable" lives rent free in my head
like that song has absolutely no right to be that good for a Sonic boss fight

okay fine the music is undeniable. I'll give it that
still think the open zones needed another year of polish though. the pop-in alone was criminal at launch
